They both sup- port the bond referendum. Ward 1 incumbent John Parker said he supports the referendum and keep- ing the project on the square. Parker has served on the council since 2011.

His challenger, Stepha- nie Erickson, said she wants the county to stick to its original $29.9 mil- lion budget. She said she does not know if it should stay on the square. The forum was hosted by Simpson College and moderated by Amy Dun- can, publisher of the Indi- anola Independent Advo- cate. Other topics for dis- cussion included the nancial troubles at the In- dianola YMCA and the relationship with Simpson College. The YMCA of Greater Des Moines told residents earlier this year that the Indianola YMCA has one year to improve its cial situation or face clo- sure.

The has operated in a city-owned building since 2012. It pays the city $21,500 per month in rent. Candidates were asked Oct. 1 if they would sup- port cutting the rent. Hulen, the exec- utive director, said that if she were elected, she would have to recuse her- self from issues related to the YMCA.

Armstrong and Schro- der both said that Simp- son and Indianola High School should be involved in the discussion. Both schools rejected the request for cial support earlier this year. The veteran, who served in postwar Japan following World War II, noticed all of the flags currently on the Village campus were only visible from the front of his building.

So this past summer he purchased a telescoping pole, which he installed in the back of his building visible from the apartment he shares with his wife. The flag was raised for the time on the Fourth of July. The connector will pro- vide walking access to the Vintage Hills retirement community, MercyOne Family Medical Clinic and other businesses.

Indianola has also started work on the Jerry Kelley Trail after con- struction was delayed to install a retaining wall to accommodate a creek crossing along West Eu- clid Avenue. The extension will add to an existing portion of the Jerry Kelley Trail, which branches the Summerset Trail just past Sixth Street and Euclid Avenue and runs to Me- morial Park. It will pick up where the existing trail ends at the Indianola Veterans Memorial Aquatic Center and extend 1.5 miles west along Iowa Avenue, Ken- wood Boulevard and Eu- clid Avenue to Wilder Ele- mentary School. The project began the week of July. It should be by mid-October, Bylund said.

He said the project cost was $484,711 and was partly paid for with a $282,920 grant from the Iowa Department of Transportation and $16,480 from Wellmark Blue Cross Blue Shield. Trails Continued from Page 1A.
