INTERNS- Continued from Page One and we're trying to tailor the skills to the interest of the family practice students and where they might eventually practice. "Under the old system, each student took the same courses and they all came out of the same mold, regardless of where they might later practice." Will new family practice programs result in more physicians for Iowa? "I hope so," said Dr. Rakel. Sixty-two sophomore medical students from Iowa are serving on MECO assignments all over the state this summer, Sellers said. The aim of the MECO program is to give medical students health care experience in community medical practices early in their careers. Ten others were planned on subsequent Friday nights during the summer.

The University of Iowa now has 597 medical students, 252 dental students, 72 dental, hygiene students, 56 dental graduate students and 479 student nurses, or a total of 1,474 in health sciences. More MDs The number of MDs receiving degrees at Iowa has increased from 105 in 1970 to 123 in 1971 and 147 in 1972. A year ago, officials estimated that only about 35 per cent of the Iowa medical college graduates remained in the state to practice. A 1971 SAMA study of the problem of retaining Iowa-trained physicians in Iowa suggested: The solution to health manpower distribution of shortages does not rest solely with the University of Iowa or the medical students. Iowa cities and small communities must participate in local, state and regional changes to establish adequate health care.

Small communities and in-tra-community organizations can attract physicians to Iowa if they are willing to properly sell themselves. An awareness of the individualism of physicians is necessary, including the knowledge that multiple factors influence a physician's family on his practice decisions. Medical students are subject to a "large number of influences and pressures," the SAMA report said. "A simplistic approach to the solution" of the health manpower problem, such as forgivable tuition or admitting students if they agree to practice in Iowa, "would probably alienate many future physicians that the State of Iowa needs. "A more unified solution lies in a unified approach on many levels.

"Iowa communities are losing educated young people trained in all areas because they often do not provide opportunities for employment which uses the education. Worldly Attitudes "In addition, the communities usually insist that the young people adopt a life style which to them is archaic and repres-i sive. These communities will have to adopt a more worldly attitude if they expect to attract worldly people." Progressively increasing enrollments at the medical college in recent years should help medical students are assigned pitals bold-face type): Spencer K. Anneber, McKenan Hospital, Sioux Falls, S.D.
