Taxes Went Up Last Time. The statehouse worry that war prices will make it harder to keep house on the old scale is an illustration that war prosperity can hurt as well as help. Iowa taxes took a hop during the first world war. Gov. George A.

Wilson had special reasons for celebrating Labor day with a smile. The button strike at Muscatine and the packing strike at Ottumwa were settled without the political heat that labor trouble brought to the previous administration. And shortly after Labor day, the Younkers strike at Des Moines also was settled without putting Wilson on the spot. United States Herring startled some of the Moines Chamber of Commerce folk when he told them the American public wants to be neutral-on the side of England and France. None of his audience seemed inclined to deny it but some thought it shouldn't be said right out in public that way.

If Herring's remark was indiscreet, Republicans could take no partisan advantage of the Democratic senator's boldness, however. The very same day at another meeting Congressman C. C. Dowell Des Moines, said prac- same thing. It may be just pure accident, but it is noticeable that since its new Republican majority came in July 1, the highway commission hasn't been calling for bids on any of that $10,000 to $15,000 a mile special type asphalt for primary roads.

The Tama Indians are the latest sufferers from the burden of federal taxation. The Great White Father's hired men descended on them recently for about $125 amusement tax on the receipts of the last dance. What makes it embarrassing for the Indians is that they had already distributed most of the pow-wow profits among the tribal entertainers. Reports of the recent debate between former Gov. Nelson G.

Kraschel, Democrat, and State Representative Dean Pelsen Eldora, at Graettinger Labor day are to the effect that Kraschel barred no holds. Kraschel apparently wanted to make up for his experience a year ago when he met the then Republican candidate for governor, George Wilson, on the same platform. Kraschel, with his campaign still under wraps, delivered a nonpolitical speech, but Wilson gave him both barrels. John V. Wicklund, who will be remembered for his letter of protest against the spoils system when he gave up his 20-year post in the state inheritance tax department recently, has set up business as a tax consultant in the Paramount building.
