JESSE MILLER 801 Locust St. (Corner Store). ROTH NEEDS MONEY MORE THAN SCHOOLS Man Who Finds 850 Says School Fund Will Never See It, and Quits Justice Office. 'Tis an ill wind that blows no good," quoth John Roth as he entered the law offices of Justice Van Llew this morning. accompanied by a smile which lighted the whole room.

"You see it's this way," explained Roth. Just got let out this morning at the mines and was coming down the street when I picked up this here wallet. Fifty dollars altogether in that roll. What will I have to do to keep it, Justice Van Liew Informed Roth that under the law the money would in time be turned over to the school fund. "The school fund will never see this ntty," explained Roth, as he left the office.

"I need it worse than the school fund does." New Apartment House. A two story brick apartment house to cost 88,000 is being erected at 1609-1611 Center street by E. 0. and Ada G. Hulsizer.

The building will be ready for occupancy about June BOYS TELL OF NAVY CRUISE William Shackelford and Fred Van Aken Now in Des Moines. HAD GREAT TIME ON LONG TRIP Young Men Say They Were Treated Royally in All Countries. William Shackelford and Fred Van Aken, the first two boys who went around the world with the fleet to arrive in Des Molnes, came into the city last night straight from Boston. The two boys were on the ship New Jersey and left with the fleet in December, 1907, when It started on its 45.000-mile trip, They landed at Boston Tuesday morning and were given a furlough for sixteen days, coming direct from there to see their familles here. Shackelford is the son of Mr.

and Mrs. Lincoln Shackelford, who live in Crocker Woods. Van Aken 18 the son of Mr. and Mrs. A.

E. Van Aken of 1201 Forest avenue. When he arrived in Des Molnes last night it was to find that his father and mother had gone to Iowa City for a few days. He followed them there this morning. Sitting on a bench in the Rock Island station this morning while he was waiting for the train that was to take him to see his father and mother in Iowa City, young Van Aken told of the glori0118 trip around the Horn, up the west ern coast and then the return.

back through the Indian ocean, through the Suez canal and the Atlantic ocean to the final end of the voyage at Hampton Roads. Were Treated Royally. ManY could had one of said the Van finest Aken. times "Ev- a ery port we stopped in we were treated as 1f we were the kings of the earth. Over in Japan, for I suppose you want to know how the Japs treated us, we owned the whole country.

We landed at Yokahoma and say, maybe we didn't have a time, They gave us a big reception and a grand feast with all you could eat and drink, and that's what makes 8 hit with the sailor boy. Everything was free. Well, It was that way every place we stopped any way, but over there where we really didn't expect much we got everything there was. They had barrels of wine and beer and champagne and all kinds of drinks you never heard of. When a man from the fleet went into the houses over there all the Japanese in the place would set up a great cheer and the bartender or whatever he is in their lingo would set up the drinks for the whole crowd in the place.

The sailor's money was not good for anything any place. The people of every country we visited treated 118 the same way. Down in Australia thes couldn't have shown any greater respect to the American flag than they did. But say, I want to tell you something on the sly. When we salled Into the harbor of Yokahoma there were just eighteen Japanese ships of war lying over on the starboard side of the port.

They were painted In war color, slate color you know. and they were there for business. You could see if we had started anything out of the usual programme they would have been prepared for us. Visit Pyramids On Camels. "When we reached Suez on the way back I was one a party of thirty-five men from our ship who left the boat and went over to Cairo on camels.

We left early in the morning and rode to Cairo in about four hours. The way they travel 19 something ferce. They gO along in a skippity-hop sideways and backward jump gallop and before you are fairly started you have landed nt your destination. We looked over Cairo and then went down to see the Pyramida and the Sphyrx. That was a great time.

We 9a. the Needles Eye and everything else that was worth noticing. We were gone from the ship just two days and the trip cost each of us Just $1.60. We joined the ships at Port Said and then went through the Mediterranean. Admiral Sperry took his ship and went over to Sicily to see the ruins at Messina.

He took along cargo of supplies for the sufferers and do you know they fairly depleted our stock. We had half rations until we got back to Boston. We were glad to help out the poor people even if we didn't get much to eat after It. Glad to Get Home. "When we galled into Hampton Roads maybe you think we weren't glad to get back.

It was A cold, foggy morning. Our ship was the seventh in the column. The Nebraska was the frat one ahead of us, and the Georgia, the flagship of our squadron, WAS in front of it. The New Jersey is in the second squadron. Well.

with those six other ships ahead of us we could hardly walt until we landed. It certainly does seem queer to be way out here in Des NO SERIOUS DISAGREEMENT Attorney General Byers and Supreme Court Are Not at Outs. as Commonly Believed. Members of the supreme court and the legal department at the state house have been enjoying themselves during the last few days over the rumors that have been floating about that there were serious difterences of opinion between the court and Attorney General Byers with respect to the authority over the historical department. The fact is that the judges and the executive council joined in referring the question to the attorney general.

And so the attorney general has not reversed the supreme court. INFANT DAUGHTER OF FRANK DUNN DIES Ten- Months-Old Child Succumbs to Complication of Diseases at Home Near Grimes.
