I passed away on May 23, 2017 at 93 years of age. I had a good life. I had joys and disappointments and frustrations and the love and help of many along the way. I was born January 14, 1924 on a farm near Lockridge, Iowa in Jefferson County.

Most of my school years were in Agency, Iowa. Upon graduation from high school, I enrolled at Iowa Wesleyan College. While there, I joined the Navy and participated in the V-12 program. After midshipmen school, I received a commission of Ensign and served aboard LST 458 in the South Pacific. Upon discharge, I enrolled at Iowa State University in engineering, graduated and received employment at the John Deere Des Moines Works becoming a supervisor in the process and tooling department.

After thirty years, I retired. I met Norma Fidler at the First United Methodist Church in Des Moines, and we were married in Adel in 1952. Norma and I were blessed with four children: Mark (Maribeth) Schillerstrom, Roger (Susan) Schil- lerstrom, Marie (Cliff) Sample, and Laura (Craig) Strayer. I am survived by seven grand-children, six great-grandchildren, and a brother, Ellsworth Carrol of Texas. Three sisters, Laurel, Lorene, and Lois preceded me in death.

May the good Lord bless you, and may you enjoy all of your living days; they go fast. Memorial services will be 2:00 pm Wednesday May 31, 2017 at the First United Methodist Church in Des Moines with visitation 1 hour prior to the service. DUNDEE Child falls 60 feet at park during hike An 8-year-old girl fell 60 feet during a family hike Sunday at Backbone State Park in eastern Iowa, state officials said. The girl, from Jesup, was hiking with family around 1:30 p.m. Saturday when she fell. She was transported to the University of Iowa Hospital in Iowa City by a medical helicopter, according to information from the Iowa Department of Natural Resources. The name has not been released and the extent of her injuries was unknown as of late Monday morning.

Backbone is known as one of the best places to hike in the state because of its limestone formations that named after, as well as its lake and river views. Delaware County officials are investigating the incident. The department directed calls to park ranger, Dave Sunne, who was not immediately available for comment Monday. 2. JEFFERSON Bell tower to ring after 30-plus years Awell-known Iowa bell tower will soon be ringing for the first time in more than 30 years.

renovation project on the Mahanay Bell Tower in Jefferson is expected to finish next week, just in time for the 37th annual Bell Tower Festival in June, KCCI-TV reported. The project refurbished existing bells and added 30 more. The bell tower had been in disrepair since the 1980s and had been playing recordings instead of actually ringing. years talked about getting all the bells up there and making it said Jefferson resident Gordon Moen. with all the bells going up, there is going to be a keyboard they can play and have live concerts.

I think an exciting thing for the Nearly 50 bells make up a four-octave carillon that can be programed to play melodies or played by hand. All of the bells will hang outside on top of the bell tower. The Jefferson bell tower is one of two open-air carillons in the country. 3. MCINTIRE Town rallies around veterans memorial Organizers have raised about half the $10,000 needed for a veterans memorial in a tiny northern Iowa town.

Vietnam veteran Marvin King is among those supporting efforts to erect a memorial in the Mitchell County community of McIntire, which has about 120 residents. thought every other town has one; why not King said. The 20-foot-long limestone monument will include U.S. and Iowa flags and be placed by the gazebo near City Park, the Mason City Globe Gazette reported. There will be plaques in a half circle, each representing a different branch of the military.

Adedication ceremony is planned for Aug. 12. 4. CEDAR RAPIDS Businessman to plead guilty to new charges Court records said a northeast Iowa businessman already convicted of failing to pay employment taxes intends to plead guilty to new federal charges. Aplea hearing in U.S.

District Court in Cedar Rapids is scheduled June 5for Darrell Smith, records say. The charges: mail and wire fraud, money laundering and theft. Smith was sentenced in December to 13 months in prison for payroll tax fraud. Federal officials said the new charges are related to investment of money into a now-defunct ethanol plant in Hopkinton. Officials said that on several occasions, Smith transferred money from accounts against their will and without their knowledge his bioenergy fund.

Investigators said he used either pre- signed, blank authorization forms or forged his signatures. 5. COUNCIL BLUFFS Crash witnesses keep man from drowning Authorities said that witnesses to a crash off Interstate 80 in Council Bluffs kept the driver of acar from drowning in a ditch. The accident was reported around 9:45 p.m. Saturday near the South 24th Street exit.

The Council Bluffs Police Department said the driver lost control of his car, grazed a road sign, struck a light pole and then ran off the roadway, coming to rest in the ditch. Police said the car was submerged in waist-deep water, but witnesses who had rushed to help the driver keep his head out of the water. First responders soon arrived to remove him from the wreckage, treat him and take him to a hospital. The name of the 54- year-old Council Bluffs resident been released. Register staff and wire reports 1 4 5 3 2 AROUND IOWA died in the shooting.

Yien Nhial, 27, and Simon Joseph, 23, both of Des Moines, were also injured. Jock's arrest Saturday was not related to the homicide, Des Moines police Sgt. Paul Parizek told KCCI-TV on Saturday. But forensics experts are analyzing the stolen gun confiscated from Jock to see whether it matches shell casings found in the church parking lot after the shooting, he said. No one has been arrested in the homicide case.

Court records show Jock was arrested during atraffic stop about 2:12 a.m. Saturday. Police found a semi-automatic pistol in his car's glove box without a permit to carry, according to the criminal complaint filed in court against Jock. The gun had been reported stolen in Spencer, according to the com- plaint. Jock has appeared in court since his arrest, and his jail bond was set at $7,000.

He remained in jail on Monday. The May 21 shooting outside Zion church was the 15th homicide in Des Moines this year. Last year, there were 13 total homicides in Des Moines. The increase in homicides joins a recent increase in gun violence in Des Moines. Police Chief Dana Wingert has said officers are responding to more calls of gunshots fired and confiscating record-high numbers of guns.

The weapon taken from Jock upon his arrest is an example of these guns being confiscated. Much of this "reckless" gun violence seems to be rooted in personal conflicts between maybe a few dozen people, mostly age 17 to 25, Wingert said in a community meeting at Zion churchlast week after the shooting. Five of the 15 people killed in homicides in Des Moinesthis year were younger than age 25. Arrest Continued from Page 3A.
