Eleven people have been wounded by gunfire since May in Waterloo, prompting Mayor Tim Hurley to demand an end to the violence. Hurley said he is frustrated, irritated and fed up with the number of shootings that have occurred in Waterloo. The latest shooting occurred late Monday in the parking lot of a convenience store.

Police said Tuesday the victim, Bernard Edwards, 33, of Waterloo was in stable condition in a local hospital with a wound in the abdomen. Hurley said he doesn't have a plan to end the violence, but will work with neighborhood associations to find a remedy. Gerry Dean Ballantyne, age 60, of Earlham, died at his home early Sunday July 19, 2009. Funeral services will be 10:30 a.m., Thursday July 23, 2009, at the Kuhn Funeral Home in Earlham with burial in the Rose Hill Cemetery in Blockton, IA, at 2 pm. Gerry is survived by his wife, Charlene of Earlham; children, Kim(Travis) Car-rier of Harlan, Gerry Ballantyne of Harlan, Richard Ballantyne of Harlan, Caleb and Georgia Ballantyne of Earlham; his father, Gene Ballantyne Sr.

(PARKER) MONROE WEBB Des Moines Edith M. (Parker) t9i Monroe Webb, 101, passed away I 1 Sunday, July 19 2009 at Fleur Heights Care Center.

Edith was born August 2, 1907, in Chillicothe, MO, to Walter and Ethel Parker and had lived in Des Moines most of her life. She retired as a dental assistant, a foster grandparent and was a charter member of the Three Purpose Club. Edith was a longtime active member of Corinthian Baptist Church. Edith is survived by her daughters, Valerie Lee Weaver and Vicki Jo Whiteside; son, Robert (Asa) Webb III; and several grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-greatgrandchildren. She was preceded in death by her children, Ethel Louise Monroe-Hayes and Raymond Clyde Monroe, Jr.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m., Friday, July 24, 2009, at Corinthian Baptist Church, 814 School St. with visitation one hour prior to the service at the church. Burial will follow at Glendale Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to Corinthian Baptist Church Building Fund, Foster Grandparents or Smile Train in loving memory of Edith. JUNIOR WARNER Lenox Services for Junior Warner, age Des Moiens, who died 1aV 7" Virginia Arlino 92, formerly of Des Moines, died Monday, July 19, 2009, at Carroll Heath Center in Carroll, IA, following a short illness. A Funeral service will be held at 2 p.m., Thursday, July 23, 2009, at Merle Hay Funeral Home at Chapel Hill Cemetery, 4400 Merle Hay Des Moines. The visitation will be one hour prior to the service, beginning at 1 p.m. Born March 30, 1917, in Creston, IA, she was the daughter of Elmer and Jessie (Saxton) Laughlin. She graduated from Creston High School, Creston Junior College, and Drake University, where she earned a Master's Degree.

She and Kenneth William "Bill" Miller were married July 31, 1940, and celebrated their 62nd wedding anniversary in 2002. Mrs. Miller served as a principal, teacher, and guidance counselor. She taught in Creston, Greenfield, Persia and West Des Moines. She retired from the West Des Moines School system.

Virginia was a member of P.E.O. Chapter HK for fifty plus years and was also a member of Westminster Presbyterian Church. Survivors include her children, Larry Miller of Oregon, IL, Cheri Webb of Spring, TX, and Terri Miller of Carroll, IA; grandchildren, Ann Arza of Buffalo Grove, IL, Beth Brandt of Minneapolis, MN, Stacie Johnson of West Des Moines, Cristina Deeds of West Des Moines, Gretchen Wagner of Baraboo, WI, Allison Hendrickson of Davenport, IA; 16 greatgrandchildren; and a sister, Raedeen Manor of Bayard, IA. in Winterset Cemetery. Ruth was born August 18, 1921, on a farm near Pitzer, IA, to Erwin and Ethel Bond. She graduated from White Oak High School. She attended Simpson and Drake Universities with a degree in education. She taught school in Lemon Grove, CA, and Ankeny for 43 years.

She was active in the Church of The Brethren and the Penguins Friendship Group and served on many boards and committees. She is preceded in death by her parents; and three sisters, Enolia Bond, Wilma Myers and Eyleen Severson. Those left to cherish her memory are many nieces and nephews, Eugene and Wayne Myers and Kelli Maly of San Diego, CA, Steve Fausch and Cathy Miemann of Ankeny, Cinda Hathaway of Muscatine; and great nieces and great nephews. Mass of Christian burial will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at St. John's Catholic Church in Adel with burial in St. Mary's Cemetery in Dallas Center, Iowa. Erma graduated from S.S Peter and Paul High School in Nauvoo, Illinois and also graduated from Ottumwa Heights College in Ottumwa, Iowa.

She was a teacher in the Hancock, Illinois County School for six years. Erma married Irvin Bentler of Houghton, Iowa on December 28, 1942, at Fort Sill, Oklahoma. Erma leaves to celebrate her life: son David Bentler of Dexter; son Edward Bentler(Susan) of Earlham; daughter Deborah (Larry) Corkrean of Winterset; daughter Linda Pickering of Carlisle; daughter Brenda (Terry) Dhabalt of Earlham; sister Marcella Thompson of Carthage, Illinois; 19 grandchildren and 23 great-grandchildren. Des Moines PICKETT Arthilla A. Pickett, 86, went home to be with the Lord Monday, July 20, 2009, at Iowa Luth eran Hospital. A graveside service will be held at 1 p.m., Thursday, July 23, 2009, at Sunset Memorial Gardens. Visitation will be held 4 to 7 p.m., Wednesday, at Hamilton's Funeral Home, 605 Lyon Street. Arthilla was born January 19, 1923, to Jesse and Flora Saddoris in Lincoln, NE.

She lived in the Des Moines area most of her life. She married the love of her life, Ted Pickett on December 31, 1941. Arthilla retired from the Polk County Juvenile Home in 1981 where she cooked for many. She loved to bake cakes and cookies, work jigsaw puzzles and word puzzles and spend time with her beloved cat Arthilla is survived by her daughter, Marie Haus; son, Roger Pickett; grandchildren, Mischelle (Robert) Smith, Kimberley Schrier, Glenn (Shannon) Haus and Julie (Lee) Earles; twelve great-grandchildren; and 15 great-great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents; three brothers; husband, Ted; son-in-law, Cecil; and granddaughter, Deborah Grow.

Ankeny Richard "Rick" Johnson, 44, of Ankeny died Sunday, July 19, 2009, at Iowa Methodist Hospital. Mass of Christian Burial will be 10 a.m, Thursday, July 23, 2009, at St. Ambrose Cathedral, (607 High St.

Des Moines, IA 50309). Visitation will be 4 to 8 p.m., Wednesday at St. Ambrose Cathedral with a vigil service at 7:30 p.m.. Burial will be in Ankeny Memorial Gardens. Rick was born July 10, 1965, in Washington, Iowa to Richard and Irene Johnson.

He worked at Principal Financial Group since 1985. He enjoyed coaching his three children in every sport, including, baseball, softball, football and soccer. His hobbies were fishing, deer hunting, and watching football and hockey games. His family includes his wife, Toby Johnson; three children, Bailey, Savana and Nolan of Ankeny; mother, Irene Johnson of Winfield, IA; brother, Mike Johnson of Des Moines, IA; sister Jackie (Don) Kaska of Fairfield, IA and several nieces and nephews. He is preceded in death by his father, Richard and his grandparents.

Ankeny Funeral Home 515-9644674 ETTA MARIE BUCKINGHAM Ottumwa Etta Marie Buckingham went to the Lord on Monday, July 20, 2009, after a courageous battle with cancer. Etta Marie was born to Abram Chris Royer and Thelma Marie Runte Royer in Dallas Center, IA, on February 7, 1927. Etta Marie graduated from Dallas Center High School in 1944 and attended Drake University. Following the death of her parents, she and her sister Ruth were adopted by her maternal Aunt Flo Runte Nissly and her husband Cecil Nissly.

Etta Marie then transferred to McPherson College in McPherson, KS, and graduated cum laude in 1948. While attending McPherson College, Etta Marie met Orville Buckingham, the love of her life, and they married on June 4, 1948. Etta Marie and Orville taught for many years until retiring from Ottumwa High School in 1986. Etta Marie received her MA degree from Truman State University in 1972. Etta Marie was a member of the Ottumwa Church of the Brethren.

Etta Marie loved antiquing, playing bridge, and giving away the produce Orville grew in the garden. Etta Marie is survived by her husband, Orville; sons, Stephen (Elizabeth) of Minnesota and Robert (Jean) of Waverly; and special grandchildren, Megan, Lyndi, and Christopher. She is also survived by her sister, Ruth McCord of California; and many loving nieces, nephews and cousins. She was preceded in death by her parents; her adoptive parents; and brother-in-law, Tom McCord. A memorial service will be 10 a.m., Thursday, at Church of the Brethren in Ottumwa with Pastor Dennis Doud officiating.

Private inurnment will follow. The family will be present from 5 to 7 p.m., Wednesday, at Reece Funeral Home in Ottumwa. Edith was born to Clark and Clara Myers in Tacoma, WA, on March 1, 1921. She then moved to Des Moines where she has spent the past 88 years. Edith was a longtime member of the Staves United Methodist Church. Edith is survived by her daughter, Patti (John) Ochanpaugh; sons, Gerry (Dianna) Granberg, and George (Barb) Granberg five grandchildren, and seven great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her loving husband G.

Eldon, brother, George Myers, and sister, Doris Hart. Memorial contributions may be directed toward the Hospice of Central Iowa. JACK H. L0RING Webster City Jack H. Loring, 84, of Sloan, IA, and formerly of Webster City, IA, died Monday, July 20, 2009, at his home in Sloan, IA.

The Mass will be Thursday, July 23 at 10 a.m. at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Mapleton, IA, with Msgr. Mark Duchaine officiating. Burial will be at 3:30 p.m., in Graceland Cemetery at Webster City, IA, with military graveside honors provided by the Webster City American Legion Post 191.
