8B Saturday, July 28, 2001 IOWALIFE The Des Moines Register ST Vet comes to the rescue of dog hating husband Dear Ann: You asked your readers to respond to "Fed Up in Flint, whose wife brought a dog home from an animal shelter. He said he was sick of the odor and animal hair all over the house. CREATORS SYNDICATE LANDERS recommendations: I am a veterinariANN an and have some 1. Spay or neuter the dog if it hasn't already been done. This will calm him down and make him less territorial.

It also helps reduce pet overpopulation. 2. The husband needs a sanctuary. Establish an area of the house as a non-pet area. This can be done by closing doors or blocking areas with childproof gates to make sure the animal cannot enter.

3. The dog also needs an area. It can be a doggie bed, a crate or an exercise pen. A crate not only offers security; it provides a place for the dog to sleep. 4.

Obedience training is essential, and if possible, the husband should attend with the dog. It will help them bond and allow the husband to issue commands. 5. Exercise is an absolute necessity and helps "tire out" the dog so he isn't as restless. It will also help him sleep better at night.

6. Dogs respond well to routine. Establish regular schedules for exercise, mealtime and bedtime. 7. Clean frequently.

Vacuum at least twice a week to cut down on the amount of dog hair. Also, invest in lint rollers to remove hair from clothing and furniture. And teach the dog not to climb up on the furniture. 8. Veterinary advice can provide a smoother transition.

Develop a relationship with the local veterinarian. I hope this helps. Julie Damron, Stockton, Calif. Ann says: It should help a lot. Thanks for the input.

Here's more: From Madison, That animal lover should 1 not sleep with her dog. I sleep with my wife. "Fido" sleeps in the basement. I like animals in the barn. Reinholds, When a wife brings home a dog without consulting her husband, do you think she'll consider his wishes when she wants a baby? This couple needs some heavy duty marriage counseling.

NOW. Jenison, I promised to provide all the care, grooming, feeding and walking for our dog because my husband didn't want a pet. I stuck to my agreement and enrolled the dog in obedience classes. My husband has had no complaints, and, when he thinks I'm not looking, he pets the dog and is very affectionate. Scottsdale, I ignored my husband's protests and assumed he would adjust to the dog in time.

It never happened. He was jealous of the dog, and I almost lost my marriage over this. Maiden, N.C.: Tell her to get rid of the mutt. Inside pets aren't worth the mess they make. She should respect her husband's wishes.

St. Louis: You'd think that letter was written by a spoiled child, not an adult male. The problem isn't the dog; it's the lack of attention. His wife seems to be more interested in the dog than she is in him. No wonder he's upset.

Victoria, B.C.: My husband is allergic to dogs. I cover all the furniture with machine-washable slipcovers and use air filters to remove allergens and odors. Austin, Texas: Animal urine stinks. When dogs wet the carpet, it gets into the padding underneath. Most pet owners don't realize how bad their homes smell.

Ontario, Canada: The wife obviously bought a pet because she needs more affection than she's getting from her husband. A in smelly, hairy dog is a lot better than another man. Tell him to quit beefin'. Send questions to Ann Landers, Creators Syndicate, 5777 W. Century Suite 700, Los Angeles, Calif.

90045. not SPECIAL TO THE REGISTER Makes her mark: Reese Witherspoon in "Legally Blonde" proves to be a big film attraction. Forget foxy: Moxie defines summer roles for women Wake up, already funny, feisty and fashion-conscious femmes are moviegoers' midsummer dream. Although the plots don't bear much resemblance, the lead characters in the PG-13 "Legally Blonde," the R-rated "Ghost World" and next Friday's "The Princess Diaries" share a common bond, a kind of spirited sisterhood. The brainy and toughminded young heroines are easy on the eyes, but glamour and sex appeal are not what they trade on.

"These movies portray strong women in a way that's not exploitative, and it's so refreshing," says Anne Hathaway, who plays "Princess Mia Thermopolis, the rock -climbing, bright but shy teen who discovers she's next in line to rule a small Mediterranean country. "You can have movies about strong women, but the women are -naked through the entire film," she says. "We're relying on smarts and talent and strength. It's not rooted in sexuality." 2001 BUICK CI CLEARANCE SALE OVER 140 New Buicks Ready for Delivery all have been repaired. Stories centering on plucky heroines with moxie provide a welcome relief from the summer's usual spate of testosterone-drenched action flicks. "It's a wonderful sign that now you don't need a strong male star to sell a movie," Hathaway says. "Reese Witherspoon just beat out Robert De Niro. How huge is that?" Pretty huge, says Garry Marshall, director of "Princess Diaries." "There will always be explosions, there will always be somebody bleeding, but maybe it's time to have a little balance," he says. "This is a good trend.

'American Pie' and 'There's Something About Mary' were good movies about boys growing up. But we need to see girls growing up." And these spunky sisters are also highly principled. "They live by their own rules, in their own way, and they're very uncompromising," says Marc Platt, producer of "Legally Blonde," Is town safe from horses that eat hydrants? DUMB LAWS, from Page 5B married by publicly introducing a person as your husband or wife three times, and the 1 Encyclopedia Britannica is banned because it contains a formula for making beer at home. Life is even more restrictive in Georgia where it is apparently illegal to use profanity in front of a dead body in a funeral home or in a coroner's office. You have the right to commit simple battery if provoked by "fighting" words, and donkeys may not be kept in bathtubs.

Finally, no one may carry an ice cream cone in their back pocket on Sunday. The last states to join the Union, Alaska and Hawaii, appear to have the fewest ridiculous laws. In Hawaii, according to the Web site, all residents may be fined if they don't own a boat, and coins are not allowed in someone's ears. In Alaska, the main concern appears to be protecting wildlife. That's why the state apparently has prohibitions against viewing a moose from an airplane, waking a sleeping bear for the purpose of taking a photograph (it is legal to shoot bears though) and pushing a live moose out of a moving airplane.

About once every five or 10 years, most municipalities do a sweep through their codes, looking for laws that no longer make sense, said Nowadzky, the Marshalltown city attorney. Outdated laws that remain after the sweep are often buried deep within an ordinance that actually works. Although Nowadzky is fairly confident Ottumwa will always be safe from ravages of fire hydrant-munching horses, he notes there's no way of telling what laws a city may need 40 years down the road. "If we don't get around to repealing them, we may use them again some day," he said with a laugh. 1 and has grossed $43.5 million. Elle Woods, the heroine of "Legally Blonde," must battle dumb blonde stereotypes. Dismissed as a bimbo party girl, she goes to Harvard and proves there's a brain lurking underneath her lighthaired locks. The least conventional of the trio is Enid, the razor-tongued bohemian of "Ghost World," played by Thora Birch which made a solid $100,000 on its first weekend in five theaters. Yet she still struggles with similar issues.

"It's a period (after high school) when Enid is meeting the woman that she absolutely has to become," Birch says. "She's experiencing the world, instead of just existing in it." With more female execs greenlighting projects, as well as a heightened consciousness by male filmmakers, expect more movies about empowered women.
