Saturday, May24, 1997 7RI 5 Almanac i mumj-1 Veteran D.M. educator Dorothy Bento, 78, of Davenport, FLl, died of a stroke there The body will be cremated and Edith Marie Woodruff, 74, of 1014 S.E. 26th St. died of a stroke Thursday at Mercy Hospital Medical Alice Elizabeth Allen, 71, of 3922 10th St. died of a heart ailment May 20 at Des Moines General Hospi Dorothy Hall dies at 92 Max Gralnek, 85, of Newton died of an aneurysm Friday at Iowa Methodist Medical Center.

Services will be at 1 1 a.m. Sunday at Tifereth Israel Synagogue in Des Moines, of which he was a member. Burial will be in Jewish Glendale Cemetery. Mr. Gralnek was a lifelong resident of Newton and co-owner of Gralnek-Dunitz Co.

He was an Army Air Corps veteran and a member of the Rotary Club, the Izaak Walton League, the Elks Lodge and Club. Surviving are four daughters, Frances Gerson of Philadelphia, Marda Katz of Boston, Tamara Gorman of Santa Monica, and Minda Gralnek of Minneapolis; and nine grandchildren. Memorials may be made to his synagogue or the Newton Public Library. Dunn's Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements. Hundreds of youngsters did go through her classes, however, learn-, ing about prepositions and helping verbs and techniques for giving -short speeches.

One of her pupils was Robert Ray, the longtime governor of Iowa who is now interim mayor of Des Moines. Once, when Hall was in an audience of several hundred who were to listen to a nationally known speaker, she noticed the governor on the platform. He was to introduce the speaker. Hall sent Ray a note that read: "Dear Robert, I hope you do well on your oral report. Remember not to use too many If you make a mistake in grammar, don't go back and correct it.

Ninety percent of your listeners won't know the Every student in her classes learned, Ray recalled. "She was stern, firm, but an outstanding teacher," he said. "I think people were half afraid of her, but they loved to go into her class." Hall grew up in Des Moines, where she attended Hanawalt Elementary School and graduated from West High School. She went on to Lindenwood College in St. Charles, and later took education courses at Drake University.

Her first teaching Job was in a small town near St. Louis. She moved to Des Moines, taking a Job she thought would last only a year. It lasted 40 years. Services will be at 1 p.m.

Wednesday at Plymouth Congregational Church. Burial will be at Woodland Cemetery. There are no immediate survivors. Friends may call after 3 p.m. Tuesday at Westover Funeral Home.

Memorial contributions may be made to Calvin Community nursing home. a private service will be held at a later date. Mrs. Bento was born in Kansas City, and lived in Des Moines until 1993. She was a former owner of Bento Landscap ing and Garden Center.

She is survived by two sons, Greg- ory Bento and Larry Matheriy, both of Des Moines; two daughters, Victoria Anania of Lincoln, and Pat Ellis of Haines City, seven grandchildren; and 17 great-grandchildren. Laura Black, 97, of Creston died of a heart ailment Thursday at Creston Nursing and Rehabilitation Center. Services will be at 10:30 am. Tuesday at the Hill of Zion Lutheran Church near Orient, of which she was a member, Burial will be in Hill of Zion Cemetery. Mrs.

Black was born in Polk County, and later moved to Zion, where she owned the Black Store for many years. She moved to Creston in 1978. She was a former member of the Wayland Christian Church near Greshan, and belonged to Order of the Eastern Star. She is survived by a son, Richard of Creston; two grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren. Friends may call after 9 a.m.

Dorothy Ladely, 90, of Ewart died of a heart ailment Wednesday at Grinnell Regional Medical Center. Services will be at 2 p.m. Sunday at Watts Funeral Home in Montezuma, with burial in Pleasant Township Cemetery near Ewart. Mrs. Ladely was born near Montezuma and farmed in the Ewart area most of her life.

She was a member of Grace Community Church. She is survived by her husband, Russell a daughter, Mary Iverson of Apple Valley, a sister, Marjor-ie Elliott of Newton; three grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. Sampson, 92, of Story City died of a heart ailment Tuesday at Mary Greeley Medical Center. Services will be at 10 a.m. today at the Bethany Manor in Story City and 2 p.m. today at the Zion Lutheran Church near Radcliffe. Burial will be in Zion Lutheran Cemetery.

Mrs. Sampson was born near Gar-' den City and lived on a farm near Radcliffe for 62 years until 1987, when she moved to Story City. In 1991 she moved to Bethany Manor. She was a member of Zion Lutheran Church near Garden City. She is survived by a son, Charles of Carmel, two sisters, Bertha Osmundson and Violet Egeland, both of Story City; three grandchildren; and a great-grandchild.
