Iowa publisher, activist Hodges dies Van Buren County Register. He had planned to move on to a glamorous magazine job after biding his time at the small weekly newspaper. At the time ot his death, he was publisher of the Wapello County Republican, the Des Moines County News, the Iowa Valley Messenger, the Richland Plainsman-Clarion, the New London Journal, the Morning Sun News-Herald, the Van Buren County Register and the Wellman Advance all weekly newspapers. In 1991, Mr. Hodges was given a state newsman's highest award when he was named Master Editor-Publisher by the Iowa Newspaper Association.

Wapello City Councilman Larry Wagg said Mr. Hodges gave him his first job as a 14-year-old printing apprentice. Wagg said Mr. Hodges was a sawy politician whose crafty maneuvering in state and federal government bolstered Wapello's public coffers. "He knew his ins and outs," Wagg said.

"Just about any conservative cause, you name it, he was involved," said LeRoy Corey, publisher of the American Conservative Journal in Cedar Falls. He is survived by his wife, sons Michael and David, and three 1 p.m. Thursday at St. Paul AME Church, and burial will be in Chapel Hill Gardens Cemetery. Mr.

Calderon, a lifelong Des Moines resident, retired as a field engineer for IBM and was a member of Royal Dukes, Hawkeye Elks Lodge and several Masonic organizations. He is survived by five daughters, Florene Smith of Denver, and Marie Calderon, Jeannette Wilson, Madelyn Delaney and Violet Coleman, all of Des Moines; three sons, Bob of Fridley, and Gene Williams and Morris Smith, both of Los Angeles; a brother, Manuel of Kansas City, 28 grandchildren; 53 great-grandchildren; and six great-great-grandchildren. A North Star Lodge service will be at 7 p.m. Wednesday at Estes Son Funeral Home. Delwin W.

Bauer, 88, of Jefferson died of a respiratory ailment Sunday at home. Services will be at 1 1 a.m. Wednesday at First United Methodist Church, with burial in Jefferson Cemetery. Mr. Bauer, a lifelong Greene County resident, was a retired barber, an Army veteran of World War II and a member of the Methodist Church, Evening Star chapter Order of the Eastern Star, Floyd Brown American Legion post and several Masonic organizations.

Surviving are two brothers, Harold of Tacoma, and Verle of Yuma, and two sisters, Zada Doud of Pleasant Hill, and Olive Gauley of Ames. Mr. Pollard, a Navy veteran of the Korean War, was born in Lathrop, and moved to Pleasant Hill in 1967. He was the owner of Pollard Truck Service and was a driver for Concorde Trucking. Hodges, 68, a newspaper publisher, city councilman and champion of conservative causes, died Monday afternoon in Burlington of a heart ailment.

Funeral services, being handled by Sheagren Funeral Home in Burlington, are scheduled for 1 1 a.m. Thursday at St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Wapello. Visitation will be from noon to 9 p.m. Wednesday at the church.

Mr. Hodges was president of the family-owned and -operated Louisa County Publishing Co. Ltd. in Wapello. Mr.

Hodges and his wife, Mary, ran a central printing plant out of the company, where they published eight weekly newspapers. Mr. Hodges worked for the campaigns of nearly every Republican gubernatorial and congressional candidate in the last 40 years. He was the county chairman this year for Gov. Terry Branstad's re-election campaign.

Following a stint in the U.S. Army Infantry during World War II, Mr. Hodges graduated with two degrees from the University of Missouri in 1950. Later that year, he landed his first newspaper job as editor of the State appointee James Althaus dies James A. Althaus, 47, of 1510 Thompson Ave.

Mr. Althaus was born in Sioux City and moved to Des Moines 15 years ago. He had served on the state employment appeal board since being appointed by former Gov. Robert D. Ray, and was a member of the International Association of Machinists union and a former business representative on the National Association of Unemployment Insurance Appeals board of governors.

Surviving are his wife, Barbara; three sons, Alan, Karl and Gavin, all of Des Moines; his father and stepmother, Herbert and Dorothy Althaus of Hinton; four brothers, David of Sioux Rapids, Richard of El Cajon, Gary of Sioux City and Donald of San Antonio, Texas; and a sister, Barbara Fletcher of Kingsley. Friends may call after 4 p.m. Wednesday at Hamilton's Funeral Home. Memorial contributions may be made to Hospice of Central Iowa or his church's building fund. Frank James Warrington, 57, of Tulsa, died of cancer Saturday at home.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Hamilton's Funeral Home in Des Moines, with burial in Pine Hill Cemetery. Mr. Warrington was born in Spick-ard, and lived in Des Moines most of his life until moving to Oklahoma in 1978. He was a welder-pipefitter for Yaffe Metals in Tulsa and had been a veteran of the Air Force.

Mr. Hoover was born in Eagle Grove and moved to Ames in 1950 from Council Bluffs. He was a professor emeritus in the department of civil and construction engineering at Iowa State University, where he taught 38 years. A veteran of the Iowa National Guard, he was a member of the Christian Church and Ames Kiwanis Club. He was extensively involved in research in soils and materials and had conducted field investigations in Colombia and South Africa.

Surviving are his wife, Diane; a son, Dennis of Carlisle; and two grandchildren. Friends may call from 7 to 9 p.m. today at Adams Funeral Home, where the family will greet friends from 7 to 8 p.m. Memorial contributions may be made to the James M. Mabel F. Morton, 92, of Stuart died of pneumonia Friday at Community Care Center there. The body was cremated and memorial services have been scheduled for 11a.m. Thursday at Stuart-Mount Vernon United Methodist Church. Burial of the cremains will be at Green Castle (Mo.) Cemetery.
