By JACK HOVELSON Register Staff Writer A 21-year-old man arrested Sunday in Arlington, is a prime suspect in the murder of a former Mason City, woman, according to police in the Washington, D.C., suburb.

Although Chander Matta of Arlington has been charged only with the murder of another woman, a police source said his arrest has closed the cases on the May 27 slaying of Sandra Johnson, 20, an Arlington resident who was from Mason City, and the murder of a teen-ager in an adjoining suburb. Johnson's body was discovered at her apartment by a friend. She had been asphyxiated, as were Sherry Larman, 26, and Jody Phillips, 16. Matta was charged Sunday night with the murder of Larman. Evidence in the Johnson and Phillips is being turned over to an Arlington County grand jury, which will determine if Matta will be charged with either or both of those killings.

All three women were suffocated by having plastic sacks placed over their heads. Matta's arrest culminated an investigation by the FBI and Arlington, Alexandria and District of Columbia police. Iowa eyes increase in child support Associated Press The Iowa Supreme Court has filed proposed guidelines that could increase child support awards 10 percent, court officials said. "It may increase support overall," said Rebecca Colton, a court spokeswoman. "Iowa's guidelines were considered low." The court issued the proposed guidelines, a sliding scale based on the income of both parents and the number of children, to give groups interested in the issue a chance to comment.
