Much of West Okoboji Lake is still open after an initial Dec. 19 freeze-over succumbed to multiple bouts of wind and relatively balmy temperatures. Forecasts now look as though the popular vacation area may actually have winter, but the erosion of the ice by windwhipped waves makes it too dicey to plan on ice activities, Larson said. "If we get the kind of weather they are predicting, and we have enough ice, then, game on, we'll get back out there," Larson said. "But for safety reasons, we're officially planning to move the events to alternate sites now." That's not to say the games will be a flop, or even a disappointment.

Businesses in the area called last year's ice-deprived games one of the busiest on record. Each year, some restaurant proclaims Winter Games receipts rivaling Fourth of July weekend. Many years, even when the ice was good, a lack of snow cut down the number of snowmobilers. Yet motels still were heavily booked. On Wednesday, the area barely had snow.

A few piles remained on road shoulders, but brown grass basked in a strong sun. Most lakes had huge areas of open water. The Queen excursion boat remained docked at the amusement park, but surrounded by enough ice not to be tempted to take a cruise. The Winter Games feature dozens of events indoors and outdoors, ranging from musical performances to broomball, snowmobile races, card tournaments, basketball games, pancake breakfasts, snowshoeing and softball. The University of Okoboji is a fictitious university that is a hallmark of the "campus" in Dickinson County, where the Okoboji lake chain draws huge crowds in summer.

The Winter Games are one of the biggest events in the off-season, which is also drawing more people. The Winter Games are a combination of competitive events and purely for-fun activities. Mostly, they're an excuse to have fun in the dead of winter. When we have winter. For a schedule of events, visit www.vacationokoboji.com.

Two women and their 13-yearold daughters were arrested after police say one woman drove her already suspended daughter to school to fight a teenage rival. Ana Rivera, 44, and Maribel Santiago, 34, are scheduled to be arraigned today on a charge of simple assault in connection with Monday's fight.

Their daughters and two other 13- year-old girls were charged with disorderly conduct and their cases were turned over to the Juvenile Detective Division. Rivera allegedly drove her daughter to Woonsocket Middle School so she could fight Santiago's daughter. Police reports say the girls began feuding two weeks ago and began fighting outside the school on Monday. At one point, the melee involved all four girls, both mothers and a teacher, according to police. Authorities said a teacher tried to break up the fight and was hit by Santiago.

Santiago, reached at home Wednesday, said she apologized to the school's principal and was only trying to protect her daughter..
