CORN AND OATS ARE FIRM PROVISIONS ARE ALSO STEADY IN YESTERDAY'S MARKET. Wheat is Inclined to Be Weak at the Start, Opening Quotation Being Cent Lower. CHICAGO. Aug. slackening export demand and generally favorahle weather condition In the northwest were factors that contributed to any easy close In the local wheat market today.

Corn, oat and provisions closed firm. The wheat market wa Inclined to be weak at tho Mart, opening quotations being unchanged to taQ'Hc lower. The Influences that created this bearish sentiment were lower cables and weather conditions In tho spring wheat country. The rain predicted for last night fur Minnesota and the Dakota falltd to material-tee except In portions of Minnesota, and reports received today Indicated that aline irii harvesting had been somewhat acrosa the International bound- lite by wet weather, the new crop l7''ie Canadian provinces would be for market at an early date. Wheat Rallies.

I Toward the end of the first hour the Jpiarket became lirm owing to buying of September by shorts and cash Interests, 'the latter taking the nearby delivery and selling December. This resulted In a i narrowing of the premium on December tn only above September, and caused September to advance from Mc to ft'ic. Sentiment became bearish again late In iihe day and prices yielded to fairly lib-' eral profit taking by local holders. The weakness was partly due to the poor demand for cash wheat. With the exception of a few bids for durum wheat and for hard winter wheat for August loading there was no export demand today, gales of cash were not reported.

However, ten boat loads were reported for export. The market closed easy with prices iMe higher to 'fac lower. September closed at 9l'4c and December at Mi ji94Tfcc. Clearances of wheat and flour were equal to 484.000 bu. Primary receipts were "iiS.onn bu.

eomrared with 679.0M bu the corresponding day a year ago. Minneapolis. Dnluth and Chicago reported receipts of 412 cars, against 21S cars last week and 220 cars one year ago. Cash Demand Causes) Firmness. Small receipts and an excellent demand for the cash grain caused strength In the corn market.

Offerings In the pit were light nearly all day. Receiving houses reported that almost no corn was being offered from Interior points. The price of the cash grain was Vc higher, and total sales were estimated at 200.000 bushels. The market closed Attn with prices to rc above vesterdav's final quotations. Ixieal receipts were 258 cars, with 88 of contract grade.

Oats were strong all flay, particularly the May. which advanced to 52c, a new Mgh point for the crop delivery. Offerings from the country were wry light and the shipping demand was fairly brisk. Caah sales here totaled 110.0(10 bushels, find prices at the sample tables were up IrC. The market was bulllshly affected by the weekly report of a Cincinnati trade journal, which claimed that the orop of oats would prove a disappointment as to 'be vleld and as to the quantity of light utelsht grain.

The close was string with Ires up "kfHio to Ha. Local receipts fiHV'i 37 cars. N. Provisions Firm. Provisions were firm, owing to smaller receipts of live hogs at western packing centers.

Total arrivals today were estimated at 43.ut)0 head compared with 73,000 head the corresponding day a year ago. Local packers were disposed to buy because of an Improvement In the shipping demand. Private Wires. Harpe' Ward'g Market Ietter. (Ware Leland, Correspondents.) Wheat The market displayed a firm tone early, but at around top prices realising sales appeared. There ha been buying of September by elevator concerns, causing strength in that option. The deferred futures, however, have shown weakness and closed around bottom prices.

We are believers In wheat, but advise caution In buying on bulges. We would much prefer to wait a moderate dip before making purchases, which, we believe will prove attractive. Corn The present outlook Is encouraging for fair crop with favorahle wealher. There will be considerable covering of corn short, the market closing fractionally higher. Eastern demand is reported less urgent, but would appear at the moment that profit taking on long torn would seem to be in order.

Oats -Shorts covered freely and new Mgh level for May kind was reported. u. Brown today's stock market made a pronounced progress In the direction of higher prices. Again the leaders were the Harrlman Issues, Southern Pacific advancing to a new high level, and I'nlon 1'aclflo selling at Its highest figure In considerably, over a year. An excellent Impression waa created by the ease with which the new Atchison bond Issue was marketed, and by the generally better demand for high class bonds. In speculative circles a more cheerful view of niarket conditions seemed to be taken.

Unfavorable returns, w. title Interest is attracted aeant attention. For the month of July fifty-two railroads reported a decrease of 16.67 per cent In gross. For the second week of this month returns rrom tnirty-six. roads snow a decrease In gross of 11.73 per cent and for the third week twelve leading lines fell off 12 06 per cent.

Among the Individual etstements were the Northern Pacific with a deficit of for June, and Lake Shore Michigan Southern, whose Quarter ended June 30. showed a decrease of over 8325.000 In surplus. The poorest report was that of the Southern railway, which reported a decrease In gross from July 1 of l.WK.OiiO, the thitd week of this month alone falling off $186,000. That the western roads are making very slow progress toward recovery is evidenced lnthe July statement of Chicago A Northwestern, hlch reported a decrease about $700,000 in gruss. The weekly summary of conditions In the middle west confirmed last week's advices that further benefit has ac crued to crops from the recent rains.

The flarriman Issue became buoyant in the late session of the niarket, and the whole list participated in the rise. Heading made a net gain of 44 and Southern Paclnoand I'nlon pacific scored net gains of 84 and 44 points, respectively. Trading In the last two Issues constituted over 83 per cent of the day's business, which closed at top prices, despite heavy realizing for profits. The general bond market waa strong.
