8. Ft. Des 30 MARRIAGE LICENSE RECORD. lOW A RANKERS' CLUB ORGANIZED BV THE CONFERENCE. WILL ASK FOR LEGISLATION OPPOSED TO POSTAL SAVINGS RANKS AND FOR GUARANTEE.

Club Will Take In All Who Will Join Conference Was of IKmiio-rrats Only. The lot a Bankers' club. Instituted to secure legislation in Iowa for guarantee of bank deposits and to urge national legislation to like end. was organised In I Des Moines yesterday by thirty or forty oHnsers lioni ainerem pan in nic who met at the Savery hotel. John P.

O'MallCy of Perry, who called the conference and only the democratic bankers of the tat- was elected president. Parley Sheldon of Am'i was elected vice president and YV. J. Burke of Missouri Valley was made secretary. J.

C. Oonnell of Des Moines was made chairman of the legislative committee Willi poer to choose bis associates. J. g. Cunningham of Knoxvllle was made chairman of the committee on membership and with him are associated W.

B. Tallman of t'sceola and President O'Malley. The preamble of the articles of organisation of the association recites the purposes of the club, as follows: We. bankers of Iiwa. believing in the insurance of bank deposits, do associate, ourselves together for the purpose of formulating plans and rules the iwtter lo obtain legislation along the lines of the guaranteeing of hank deposits, and we have formed an association to be known the Iowa Bankers' club, and ask the co-operation of all bankers favorable to said plan.

All for Bryan. All of the bankers present being democrats, there was unanimity of sentiment In favor of Mr. Bryan. His action In the time of the panic of 1SOT was commended. At that time he urged his friends and the people to support the banks of the country by leaving their money in th; Institutions rather than add to the uncertainty of the time by withdrawing it.

The association met In the afternoon at the club rooms of the Savery. Mr. O'Malley, who bad Issued the call, was rresent. and 3. 8.

Cunningham of Knox-ville, the democratic candidate for treasurer of state, called the meeting to crder. Mr. O'Malley was Invited to act as president and Mr. Burke was made secretary. After the business of the conference had been outlined by the chairman and the speakers the meeting was held behind closed doors a committee on resolutions was appointed to draft the sense of the meeting in favor of bank deposit guarantee and against postal savings banks.

This committee was composed of the following gentlemen: J. C. O'Donnell. cashier of the German Savings bank of Des Moines. Parley Sheldon, president Story County bank of Ames.

W. B. Tallman. vice president of the Iowa State hank of Osceola J. 8.

Cunningham, president Knoxvilie National bank of Knoxvilie. W. J. Burke, cashier of the State Savings bank of Missouri Valley. Hamilton Wilcox, president Griswold National bank of Orlswold.

This committee later reported Informally in favor of legislation, both state and national, for the guarantee of bank deposits and against postal savings banks. The conference not having been called for political purposes but merely to take action on the subject of guaranteeing deposits and the postal savings bank proposition, indorsement of Mr. Bryan was not involved In the resolutions, though the members of the conference were expressive in favor of his election. The permanent organization of the Iowa Bankers' club to promote legislation for bank deposit guarantee was then effected. Majority Favor It.

President O'Malley of the club, addressing the conference, declared that he had teceived more a hundred letters from bankers who regretted that they could not come and who favored guaranteeing bank deposits. He ssld that more titan five hundreds bankers had gone on record in favor of the proposition. He said that a majority of the bankers of this state favor It. He said that they favored it without respect to the postal savings banks, opposing the latter, of course, but in any event favoring the other proposition. 'Hie democratic national committee has been taking a poll of the bankers of the west on these subjects.

Judge Wade announced the result a few days ago as being three to one almost In favor of the guarantee as against the postal savings bank. Mr. O'Malley wrote to Judge Wade concerning his plans for Iowa as follows: After conferring with numerous bankers of Iowa. It has been thought advisable to hold a conference of the democratic bankers of the state of Iowa, at the Savery house cluh rooms in Des Moines, Oct. 22.

to formulate plans for the successful presenting to the people of Iowa the question of insuring bank deposits: that the question of, insuring bank deposits Is one that is receiving rareful attention by the people Is without question. As you are aware, Is a question of the postal savings bank or the insurance of bank deposits and which is preferable. It is without question that the insurance of bank deposits by the banks is far preferable to the postal savings proposition. Th8t the matter nsay be properly presented and that the democratic bankers of the state may give expression as to their idea, it was deemed advisable to have a conference. Mr.

O'Donnell said last night that he expected to begin the work of organizing the campaign before the net legislature as soon as the election determines which candidates have been elected to the assembly.
