Fertilize your lawn, not streams and ponds. Help prevent algal blooms and growth of unwanted aquatic vegetation by knowing about your fertilizer and choosing one without phosphorus (or P). Excess phosphorus can deplete the oxygen in our water bodies which leads to algal growth.

Fertilizer labels are identified by NPK (N equals nitrogen, equals phosphorus, and equals potassium). Unless you have a newly seeded lawn, most soils in Iowa provide all the phosphorus that your grass needs. You can look for a P-free fertilizer which would be identified by "0" phosphorus or (-0-). Make sure to follow the proper application and fertilize during appropriate conditions. Suggestions for how others can use this tip: Don't over-fertilize.

Use only what you need to do the job. Sweep grass clippings, leaves and fertilizer from driveways, sidewalks, and streets. This keeps any excess fertilizer from directly entering the storm sewer system. Get your soil tested to see exactly what fertilizer you need, or choose to take a break from Ralph and Phyllis Smith, formerly of Cumming and Des Moines are celebrating their 60th wedding anniversary on April 13th, 2012.
