Harris died on Saturday, March 22, 2014 at Hospice of Central Kavanagh House on 56th Street. Jack was born September 9, 1925 to and Mabel Harris in East St. Louis, Illinois. After appointment to the Merchant Marine Academy, he served in the Merchant Marine during WWII.

Following the war he graduated from the USMMA in Kings Point, NY and completed his studies at the University of Illinois where he was a member of the Kappa Kappa chapter of the Sigma Chi fraternity. Jack had a long career in marketing and advertising, including time at Ray-Eye Productions, Needham, Harper, and Steers, and Massey Ferguson before opening a marketing and communications small business with his wife, Joyce. Jack will be remembered for his great kindness, and as a master who grew the best tomatoes, had infinite patience for lining up the perfect shot whether on the golf course or behind his camera, loved dogs and a well-crafted mystery book, and had a passion for being on the water, especially the sea. He is survived by his loving wife of 48 years, Joyce; children, Debbie McKendree, Julia Harris, and Michael Harris; grandsons, Dustin and Derek McKendree; and great-grandson, Dakotah McKendree. He was preceded in death by his infant son, John, and his parents.

A private family service was held and cremated remains will be scattered in the Pacific. HARRIS Des Moines David H. Harkness, 84, passed away Monday, March 24, 2014 at Lutheran Hospital. David was born January 27, 1930 to David W. and Grace Harkness in Chicago, Illinois. He was a United States Army Veteran and also served in the Air National Guard.

David was a pressman for Meredith Group and retired in 1994 from R.R. Donnelly after 44 years of service. He was a Scoutmaster for Boy Scouts of America and a volunteer at Iowa Methodist for 16 years. David was an active member of St. Episcopal Church.

He enjoyed traveling, reading, especially mysteries and spending time with his grandchildren. David is survived by his loving wife, Dorla; children, Dave (Sharon), Harkness, Christine (Joe) Olsen, Jennifer (Craig) and Joe (Erin) Harkness; siblings, John Harkness and Nancy Dodd; grandchildren, Mitchell, Allison, Jace, Geoffrey and Nicole; and a host of extended family and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents. A memorial service will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, March 29, 2014 at St.

Episcopal Church, 3120 E. 24th St. followed by inurnment at the church. Visitation will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. Friday, March 28, 2014 at Southtown Funeral Home, 5400 SW 9th Street.

HARKNESS Des Moines Richard Eugene Gerrard, who was born in Marshalltown, IA to Leo and Doris (Brothers) Gerrard, passed away on March 24, 2014 at Mercy Hospice in Johnston, IA.

Funeral Services will be held Saturday, March 29, 2014 at 2:30 p.m. Visitation will be one hour prior, both at Ernst Funeral Home. Private interment at the Iowa Veterans Cemetery. Dick grew up in several towns throughout Iowa. He graduated from Davenport H.S.

After graduating, he enlisted in the U.S. Navy. He was stationed in Saipan during WWII as a Seabee. Dick worked as a PBX Installer for Northwestern for 37 years. After retirement, he went on to work for Pioneer for 10 years as a groundskeeper, the City of Waukee and Auto Image.

He was a hard working family man. Dick married Linda Pfaff in 1992. A previous marriage to Peggy Bender resulted in three children. In his spare time Dick enjoyed his antique cars and car shows. He was a recreational pilot and his own plane.

He survived by his loving wife Linda of 21 years; daughters Joni (Joe) Hayes and Janiece (John) Zoutte; daughter-in-law Tonya Gerrard; grandchildren Ruanna, Eriah, Brittany, Autumn, Jennifer, Spencer and Kelsey; great-grandson Oliver; sister Beverly (Milton) Drenter and cousin Deenie Dallas. He was preceded in death by his son John Gerrard and sister Betty Schultz. The family would like to thank Dr. Rabang, IA Heart Center, VA Medical Center and support staff, Mercy, John and Barb Shoeman and Jerry Wright. RICHARD EUGENE GERRARD Waukee Wayne Menzel, 81, died Sunday, March 23, 2014 from two forms of blood disease.

Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Friday at Chapel. A Memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at Douglas Avenue Presbyterian Church in Des Moines. Wayne was born on a farm near McCallsburg, IA to Lester and Lucy (Densmore) Menzel.

After graduating from Mc- Callsburg High School he attended Luther College, spent two years in the U.S. Army and earned a degree from the University of Iowa. While at Iowa he met Lois Jacoby and they were married in 1958. job was with the Bankers Life Company in Des Moines. In 1960 he began working for Meredith Corporation in Des Moines, retiring in 1995 after 35 years.

Along the way, Wayne and Lois had two children, Scott and Paula. Family vacations were spent in Gunnison County Colorado, hiking, and seeing old friends. As empty nesters, Wayne and Lois took bicycle trips in Europe and small ship cruises to Alaska and Central America. An avid bicyclist, Wayne participated in several RAGBRAI rides as well as the Iowa 150. He was also an avid and enjoyed and trips to Canada.

Wayne and Lois were members of Douglas Avenue Presbyterian Church for many years. Wayne was a charter member of the Clive Lions Club and served many including president and treasurer. He also volunteered for many years with SHIIP. Wayne is survived by his daughter, Paula (Paul) Hartmann; and grandchildren, Eric and Lucy. He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Lois; and son, Scott.

The family would like to thank Dr. Schreck and Dr. Buroker and their nurses for the kindness and expert care throughout his illness. Memorials may be sent to the Iowa Natural Heritage Foundation or the John Stoddard Cancer Center. WAYNE MENZEL Des Moines William Winter, 87, of Ankeny, Iowa passed away Monday, March 24, 2014 at his home.

Memorial services will be held at 2 p.m., Saturday, March 29, 2014 at Ankeny Funeral Home. William Gene Winter was born February 14, 1927 in Webster City, Iowa to Wray and Bade (Read) Winter. He grew up and received his education in Webster City and Jewell, Iowa. Upon graduation William enlisted in the U.S. Navy serving in the Seabees U.S.

Naval Construction Force. This was something William took great pride in and was very proud of all military members. On January 28, 1949 in Webster City, William was united in marriage to Faye Eloise Meyers. The couple made their home in Ankeny and was blessed with two daughters; Janis and Lynda. William was employed as an Accountant for various companies around Des Moines during his career.

William had a passion for and held his private license for many years. He was also a member of the EAA and AOPA, both aviation memberships. During retirement William took great joy in traveling, gardening, and treasured his time with his grandchildren and great children who all held a special place in his heart. Survivors include his friend and companion of 20 years, Betty Prather; daughter, Janis Faye Winter; grandsons, Keith (Dawn) Johnson, Scott (Mandi Adair) Johnson, William (Jenna Hall) Loos, and Anthony Loos; great-grandchildren, Gabriel, Vanessa, Brittany, Noah, and Emerson; and two sisters, Betty Wing and Bonnie Ingertson both of California. He was preceded in death by his wife, Faye; and daughter, Lynda.

McClean age 92, of Ames died Wed Mar. 26, at Northcrest Community. A gathering of friends and family will be 2:00 4:00 pm Sunday March 29, at Grandon Funeral and Cremation Care 414 Lincoln Way in Ames, with a funeral service at 10:30 am Monday, Mar 31, at First Evangelical Free Church on 24th Street in Ames with burial at 2:00 pm at Union Cemetery in Newton, Iowa. Jim was born July 31, 1921 in Des Moines, Iowa the son of Fred and Dorothy McClean. He married Nada Klopping on January 27, 1945 in Newton, Iowa.

He graduated from Newton High School in 1940 and Illinois College of Optometry in Chicago in 1947. He was a WW II Coast Guard Veteran. The couple moved to Ames in 1949 where he practiced and retired in 1987after 40 years as a Doctor of Optometry. Jim was past President of The Ames, Jaycees in 1951, a life member of Iowa Optometric Association, and the American Optometric Association; Volunteer Optometric Services to Humanity, past member of the Rotary Club of Ames where he was a Paul Harris Fellow, Ames Golf and Country Club, Bethesda Lutheran Church, and later at First Evangelical Free Church of Ames. Jim loved fishing, golfing, bridge, cribbage, Christian studies, and volunteering at Mary Greeley Medical Center.

In his later years he played golf at Homewood Golf Course in Ames. He enjoyed staying active in several community events as long as he was able to enjoy them. Jim is survived by his wife, Nada McClean of Ames, his children, Gale (Art) Ehlers of Bettendorf, Dan McClean of Dyersville, two grandsons, Matthew and Michael McClean a sister, Verna Lou (Jerry) Power of Missoula, MT nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by two sisters, Helen Wormley, and Jean Hobin. In lieu of memorial may be directed to Northcrest Community in Ames.

Catholic Church, 139 3rd Street SE in Britt with Fr. Dennis Miller Burial will be held at St. Catholic Cemetery in Britt. Visitation will be held on Friday, March 28, 2014 from 4:00 to 6:00 PM at St. Catholic Church in Britt, with a Knights of Columbus Rosary and scriptural wake service beginning at 6:00 PM.

Visitation will also continue one hour prior to services at the church on Saturday.
